Porthole Views of the World

Watercolors by Hazel Thorson Stoick Stoeckeler

Poems by Elizabeth Weber

About the Book

Hazel Stoeckeler’s watercolors cling to their first impressions of a place. As a group they make a transcontinental record of what at the same time endures and disappears. Elizabeth Weber responds in poems capturing place, the traveler, the present, the timeless–and in doing so creates a vital conversation between two artists about their most elemental responses to the world.

beyond yourself

blue silence

the whisper of transcendence

I believe in wind and wave
and peace

While most travelers take photographs or collect postcards, Hazel Thorson Stoick Stoeckeler’s paintings capture the landscape as she experiences it personally – through the sun, the air, the color, and life in that moment. Elizabeth Weber’s poems complement the paintings by exploring the human history layered throughout the landscape. This global collection of pastoral souvenirs reminds us of the beauty to be found in every corner of the world.
